Gert Loubser, Stellar Foundation Social Development Officer, is a representative for farm workers on the West Coast Sport Council. He’s seen for himself that in addition to physical gains, Judo helps children build self esteem and teaches great mental discipline. Inspired by this, Gert set out to bring the ancient art to the children who live in the rural area near our cellar in Vredendal.
Stellar Judo Club was officially established on Friday, 13 February at Stellar Vredendal. The club will be coached by none other than Owen Palm, a worker at Stellar Winery and worker’s committee representative.
We were honoured by a number of important guests, which included Sensei Tara from Judo South Africa, Senseis Miggel and Brutus, Directors of Sport: Ronelle Jonathan, Cornelius Malgas and Basil Elman, John le Fleur from the West Coast Sport Council and Carmen Brutus, the Secretary of West Coast Judo.
A Judo workshop was held at Stellar Vredendal the very day after the club’s inception. The children did very well, and many of them qualified to go through to the competition in Saldanha Bay on 28 February 2015. Senseis Tara and Brutus agreed that they rarely see such natural talent!
To top it off, Gert was honoured by Basil Elman, Director of West Coast Sport, with the handover of the official jacket.
