Every school holiday in South Africa, The Stellar Foundation hosts a feeding project for at-risk children in the Klawer community, right on the doorstep of our cellar, with the help of a team of women from the community.
During the holidays, these children are left at home while their parents are out earning a living, and are lucky to get even one meal per day. These women have set a great example, proving that a community can tackle poverty and see results too – the Klawer area has seen an almost-absolute decline in child-perpetrated crime during school holidays!
Even though these holidays were only a week long, it’s been the most successful feeding project to date, with more children that we anticipated coming in for a meal each day.
The team made a total of 1959 meals, feeding just over 300 kids on Monday, increasing to more than 480 children on Friday. The children enjoyed meals like chicken pasta with pumpkin, beef curry with veggies and rice and chicken noodles with rice and salad. Because more children came in each day, our team worked extra hard to ensure that there was enough to go around.
We would like to thank our team of volunteers, who cooked every day and made sure that the children were taken care of: Claudine Cupido, Juliana Nutt, Katrina Beukes, Anni de Jong, Marie Job, and Daantjie Rosenberg.
